Rod Albright Emerges GUKPT Champion at Plymouth

The Grosvenor UK Poker Tour made its seventh stop this season at Plymouth. Among the many interesting events in the season’s tour, the recent Main Event ramped up the excitement among the regular players and poker enthusiasts.

The Main Event, a £500 No-limit Hold’em Freezeout, saw poker players start the game off with the biggest stack of the season containing 1,000 big blinds. It came as no surprise to those who were involved and railbirds alike, that as a result of the big beginning, the game outlasted most other poker events of its genre by taking over four and a half hours to eliminate its first player.

From there on the player pool of 76 poker players eventually decreased, with the remaining lot getting closer to the prize pool of $38,000. Normally, the prize pool is distributed once the players get to the nine-handed final table. However, in a dramatic turn of events, the remaining players decided to do a “Bubble Saver” which is a move that awards the player who finishes at the 10th place a sum of $250.

Kev O’Donnell turned out to be the lucky winner with the Bubble Saver, when he finished in 10th place and still managed a $250 win.

At the final table, Ben Young was the first to be eliminated, when his luck bailed against Fei Yue’s sixes. The seventh place was awarded to Alan Parson, whose exit took over four hours, thanks to the amazing start that he had. The deep-stacked nature of the event certainly made it a one of a kind tournament. The next poker player to succumb to the game was Phil Pattenden-Oxenham, who was defeated at the hands of Yue.

Yue seemed to the front-runner at the tournament, as he eventually took out Vincent Calenti and Arkadiusz Sinkiewicz. Yue was all over the place and became the chip-leader there on. When just three players were left in the field, Yue’s power play started to weaken while Rod Albright eliminated the last woman at the table, Joanne Ramsden at the third place. At this point, Yue’s chip-lead had fallen, however, Albright was still trailing with 2:1 in chips.

The drama culminated in a heads-up match with Albright and Yue going at each other. The heads-up had a series of small blows, followed by huge pots and the chip-lead alternated between the two players. In the end, it was Albright who had luck on his side, when at the final hand, Yue opened to 200,000 and Albright made a call that resulted in a flop and both players checked. At the next turn, Yue bet another 240,000 and Albright called. Albright asked Yue, how much he had left, who then answered 600,000. Immediately Albright moved all-in and before Yue realized it, Albright’s full house sent Yue packing.

Albright was crowned the winner of the GUKPT at Plymouth. He won £11,900 in first place earnings, while the runner up Fei Yue was awarded £8,450.
