PokerStars Sponsors Canadian Comedy Star Gerry Dee

PokerStars, the world’s largest online poker room, has signed a sponsorship deal with Gerry Dee, a popular comedian based in Canada. He is the latest celebrity that the online poker giant has sponsored for the purpose of promoting its online poker products.

Gerry Dee (43) began his career as a comedian after chucking a teaching job in 2003, and currently, he is starring in Mr. D, his own show, which is based on the 10 years he spent as a physical education teacher in a high school. Needless to say, Mr. Dee is playing the part of a high school teacher in the show.

Regarding the sponsorship deal he recently signed with PokerStars, Mr. Dee said, “I’m better at math and statistics than the teacher you on TV, so I’m not a bad poker player. I’m no pro, but I’ve always been a bit of a poker buff. I really admire the skill it takes to compete at the top level. I’m excited about this partnership and am looking forward to improving my game!”

According to the terms of the recently signed deal, Gerry Dee will appear in a number of television advertisements that promote PokerStars point qualifiers for the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) 2013 in January. These satellites will be run throughout this year, and the winners will receive PCA prize packages worth $20k. The deal also requires Mr. Dee’s presence in the Bahamas, where the PCA will be held. The comedy star will also create a special TV show based on his experiences at Atlantis Resort and Casino, located on Paradise Island, which happens to the PCA venue.

Canadian poker player Daniel Negreanu, who is also a member of Team PokerStars Pro, appeared as a special guest on Mr. D, which will be shown in January 2013. He revealed his plans to give some high-quality poker advice to Canadian online poker players. He said: “I’ve played poker with quite a few actors over the years and many are surprisingly good players. It will be interesting to see how Gerry does at the PCA. I’m happy to have him join the contingent of Canadian players representing PokerStars, but I think he’ll need a bit of beginner’s luck in the Bahamas!”

Negreanu’s performance in the recently concluded PCA was quite spectacular. In 2011, he finished second and won a cool prize of $1 million in the $100k Super High Roller Event. In 2012, he finished fifth and won $250,900 in the same event.

PokerStars will hold the PCA from January 6 to January 15 in 2013. The event is expected to draw large crowds as usual. The PCA Frequent Player Points Qualifiers, which are being run currently at PokerStars.com, give players the opportunity to qualify for PCA 2013 with just 4 Frequent Player Points (FPPs). Called PCA Mega Path Satellites, they will be run several times daily till the end of this year. Winners of these qualifiers will get free seats to the Mega Path Finals, and the winners of these finals will receive the PCA prize packages.
