PokerStars Signs Deals with Poker Players and Football Teams

PokerStars has been busy doing a lot of sponsoring of late. Recently, the online poker room signed an agreement for the acquisition of the rights to name a football stadium, based in Lubeck in Germany. It also signed a deal with Martin Staszko, the runner-up of the Main Event of the World Series of Poker 2011, including him in Team PokerStars Pro.

The largest online poker sites in the world, PokerStars obtained the rights to name the Stadion an der Lohmehle, a multi-purpose facility with a seating capacity of 18,000 spectators, which is usually used for football tourneys. It is the home stadium of VfB Lubech, a soccer team in the fourth division. From Nov 23, the stadium has been re-christened as “PokerStars.de – Stadion an der Lohmuhle.’ According to an official statement by VfB Lubeck, the agreement to name the stadium will last throughout the 2012 – 13 season. A further option to extend the agreement by 3 years is attached.

The football club is based in Schleswig-Holstein, a state in Germany that is now gearing up to legalize the online gaming industry. This September, Schleswig-Holstein became the first German state to regulate and legalize its online poker industry. In March 2012, the state will permit its online poker operators to apply for licenses to provide online betting services. PokerStars was one of the chief supporters of the German state in its move to legalize its online gaming industry.

The online poker room is the second online gaming operator to sign a partnership deal with a German football club. Recently, Betfair got into a sponsorship deal with the Berlin-based football team Turkiyemspo.
