Negreanu Wins 5th WSOP Title after Five Years

Poker pro Daniel Negreanu who did not win any World Series of Poker (WSOP) event for the past five years finally won a WSOP bracelet in Australia when he defeated a field of 405 players and became the champion of the WSOP Asia Pacific Main Event. He also scooped up the first place prize of slightly more than $1 million.

The WSOP bracelet he won happens to be the fifth in his career. Other poker players with similar poker achievements to their credit are Berry Johnston, Allen Cunnigham, Stu Ungar, and Scotty Nguyen. A delighted Negreanu immediately posted on Twitter, expressing his joy at having won a WSOP bracelet after a five-year gap.

When the final hand was being played, Daniel Marton had an Ace and a Seven while Negreanu had pocket deuces. Fortunately for Negreanu, his pocket deuces won him the championship title. When he entered the heads-up match against Marton, he had ten times more chips in his stack than Marton. Negreanu won his WSOP Asia Pacific Main Event championship shortly after Phil Ivey bagged his ninth title.

Here are the final table results, with the POY points won by each player. The champion of the event Daniel Negreanu won 1,800 POY points and AUD1,038,825. The runner-up Daniel Marton won 1,500 POY points and AUD637,911. The players who finished third and fourth were Winifred Yu and George Tsatsis, respectively. While Yu got 1,200 POY points and AUD423,225, Tsatsis got 900 POY points and AUD284,715.

The players who finished fifth and sixth were Kahle Burns and Benny Spindler. While Burns won AUD201,994 and 750 POY points, Spindler won AUD146,205 and 450 POY points. The players who finished seventh and eighth were Mikel Habb and Russell Thomas. While Habb won AUD107,730 and $450, Thomas won AUD82,721 and $300.

When the final table action, with its eight finalists, finally began at Melbourne in Australia, Spindler was the chip leader and Negreanu had the second largest stack of chips. The smallest stack of chips was held by Winifred Yu.

The first finalist to be eliminated was Russell Thomas, who bet all in before the flop with an Ace and a Ten and was called by Tsatis, who had an Ace and a Jack. The next player to leave the table was Habb, who lost his pocket tens to Yu’s Ace and Queen. The third player to be eliminated was chip leader Spindler who bet all in with an Ace and Ten and was called by Burns. However, Burns did not have long to celebrate as he was the next player to leave the table.

At this point of the final table play, Tsatis had the second biggest stack while Negreanu had the largest stack. Tsatis, however, did not turn out to be lucky as he got a very bad hand and had to leave the table. Yu, who had survived so long, finally lost his Ace and King to Negreanu’s Jack and Nine. This left Negreanu playing heads-up against Aussie player Marton until he emerged as the champion.
