Carefree Poker Pro Turns into a Doting Father

David Williams gained name and fame ten years back when he became the runner-up of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. The life of this professional poker player, who was only 23 years old at that time, has changed a great deal during these 10 years.

Williams is now married and father of a three-year-old daughter. He says that he not the same person who won a $3.5 million pot back in 2004. He said: “Wow, (my life) is a complete 180 to be honest. I was young and stupid to be honest, I didn’t really know what I was doing and didn’t have a care in the world.”

Recalling the past, Williams said that he travelled all over the world and did just as he wished, partying at all times and living life in a carefree manner. He said that he still retains that carefree spirit, but has “learned what’s important, what really matters in life, and that’s family.”

Talking about his family he said that his wife is “amazing” and that his daughter is “everything” to him. He said: “I’m glad I was able to experience all those things at a young age. But I’m glad I’ve matured and I don’t think I would have lasted that long if I stayed that way.” Admitting that his previous lifestyle was fun, he said that he realized that one has to “get grounded to focus and succeed.” He said that poker “is still a job,” although it is fun.

Talking about the seriousness of playing poker, he said that it requires players to use their mental abilities and “make good decisions.” He said that he became a better poker player because he got a family that “grounded” him and made him focus.

He said that it is difficult to balance between work and home as playing poker requires players to stay away from their families for a long time. He said that he has not played much of poker recently because he does not want to leave his daughter. Neither did he want to take her with him and wreck her schedule.

Expressing his appreciation of PokerStars, he said that PokerStars takes good care of its players and offers the best poker tournaments. He said: “I always try to go to all of their events on the EPT, the PCA, I played a UKIPT this year and I’ve looked into going to some LAPT events. Those are the events I put a lot of priority on, along with the WSOP which is in my backyard in Vegas.” He said that random WPT events on the East Coast aren’t really worth leaving his family behind and expressed his preference for events with plenty of side events.

Obviously, Williams is eager to be a good father. He said that he will guide his daughter if she expressed a desire to play poker professionally. He said that he would support her in all ways possible just as his mother had supported him.
