Micro-Stakes and Low Limit Poker

Playing online poker is something most of us can enjoy in any capacity, but for true poker enthusiasts, playing for real money is the only way to genuinely enjoy the game. No matter your bankroll size, micro-stakes and low limit poker games generally ensure your wallet won’t suffer a big blow on a bad day.

Micro-stakes poker is when the blinds are as low as $0.01/$0.02. That’s a $0.01 small blind, and a $0.02 big blind. Even if you only have $20 or so to play with, playing micro-stakes poker can go a very long way! Micro-stakes are generally found in No Limit Texas Hold’em, as well as Fixed Limit Texas Hold’em. Then of course other poker variants like Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, 7 Card Stud, etc. $0.02/$0.04 are also considered micro-stakes poker.

Low limit poker games are not quite as cheap as micro-stakes poker, but still low enough to keep a moderate bankroll going for quite some time. $0.05/$0.10, $0.25/$0.50, $1/$2 and $2/$4 are all considered low limit poker stakes. Playing at $2/$4 in No Limit poker games will require a larger bankroll, usually $100 to $200 to make it last awhile.

Benefits of Playing Micro-Stakes and Low Limit Poker

The obvious benefit here would be the longevity of your bankroll, but there are other reasons to play micro-stakes and low limit poker games. Most notably is the level of competition, or lack thereof, at cheap poker tables.

When you play the lowest stakes, you are competing against players who don’t put enough value in their bankroll. When there are pennies on the line, most players don’t use the same discipline you would expect to find at a high stakes poker game. That translates to easy money for anyone who does apply a solid poker strategy.

It may not seem worth the effort, but remember, that’s what your opponents are thinking. And when you add all of those pennies together at the end of the day, it can amount to a lot more than a miniscule bankroll. If you win 100 hands a day, with just a $2 pot coming in, that’s still $200. Does your day job pay $200 a day? Not likely, but even if it does, wouldn’t $200 be an awfully nice addition to your weekly or monthly payroll?

Even if you only played on the weekends, that’s $400 that could go towards your kids’ college fund, a new car, or fixing up that old junk car in the garage you always said you would work on when you had the time and money.

The only requirement to winning a lot of money in micro-stakes and low limit poker games is to be diligent about your poker strategy. Don’t take unnecessary risks. Be patient and disciplined, just as you would be in a high stakes poker game. Use your opponents’ loose game play against them and rake in as much as you can when you know you are holding the best hand.
