KGC renews Full Tilt Poker’s Secondary CPA License

The Kahnawake Gaming Commission (KGC) has beamed a ray of hope on thousands of unhappy US poker players whose funds are still locked up within Full Tilt Poker, the giant online poker company that has been out of business for several days after the Alderney Gambling Control Commission (AGCC) suspended both its gaming licenses for a number of reasons. The KGC has renewed the online poker site’s secondary client provider authorization (CPA) license; and now that Full Tilt Poker is once again licensed, there is a small chance that US online poker players will get back the funds they had deposited and won on Full Tilt Poker.

The KGC’s move closely follows on the heels of the AGCC order forbidding Full Tilt Poker “to cease to register new customers, accept deposits from existing customers, allow existing customers to withdraw funds that are held in their accounts, and permit customers to participate in any form of poker game play or gambling transaction.”

Full Tilt Poker’s troubles started on Black Friday, the day on which the US federal government cracked down on 3 major poker giants offering real money poker play in the US—Full Tilt Poker, Absolute Poker, and PokerStars. The domain names of these online poker sites were confiscated and key people associated with the processing of gambling funds at these three sites were arrested. As a result, the online poker accounts of thousands of US players were frozen, with players being unable to withdraw their funds. The situation worsened when Full Tilt Poker continued giving excuse after excuse for its failure to refund its US Poker players.

Full Tilt Poker got deeper into trouble when it could not devise any way of refunding its US poker players, whose accounts were frozen by the American Department of Justice (DOJ). To make matters worse, the AGCC suspended its gaming licenses pending investigation. In the meanwhile, a group of investors from Europe expressed their interest to purchase the online poker giant and rebrand it for the European market, but the negotiations are still in progress and no sales transaction has been completed.

A KGC press statement, issued after it renewed Full Tilt Poker’s secondary CPA license, says: “To maintain a Secondary CPA, a licensee must maintain a valid license to operate interactive gaming that has been issued by a comparable jurisdiction (the primary jurisdiction).” The KGC is, therefore, closely monitoring the hearings that are being conducted by the AGCC to reach a final decision regarding the online gaming licenses held by Filco Limited, which operates under the brand name Full Tilt Poker.

Meanwhile, the AGCC has confirmed that the licenses issued to Full Tilt Poker will continue to be considered as valid although they have been suspended, till the conclusion of a hearing to decide the final fate of the online poker giant. Currently, the AGCC has postponed its hearing on the Full Tilt Poker’s gaming license issue to September, by which time, it hopes that Full Tilt Poker will sort out its various problems.
