PokerStars World Record Tournament Gets Official Guinness Certificate

PokerStars is busy engaged in creating history today, in an attempt to break its own record of 149,196 players at a single poker tournament. PokerStars was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records for running the largest online poker tournament to be ever played in the history of online poker.

In July 2009, the online poker room had run an online poker tournament with 65,000 players, which was quite a big achievement in those days. In the year 2009, on Dec 27, the online poker room conducted a $1 tournament with a player field of 149,196, an attempt that broke its previous record of 65,000 players. This record-breaking event was played at 14:45 ET with a buy-in of just $1. A lucky player called oskar69 collected the top prize of $50,000 and around 30,000 players won cash prizes. The tournament lasted around 6 hours. A full report of this historic event is available at the PokerStars Blog.

However, PokerStars has surpassed even that figure today. Players started registering for the $1 World Record Tournament very early and soon the cap of 200,000 players was reached, long before the tournament was even scheduled to commence. The online poker site has congratulated all those who participated in this record-breaker event, an event that seeks to smash PokerStars own record of 2009. A Guinness World Records representative, who was present at the event, has approved the tournament and its results. Every single player who participated in the event has helped PokerStars create history.

When this piece is being written, the World Record Tournament is still in progress. Out of the total 200,000 players who started playing it, only 11,000 are left playing for the top prize of $50,000, which is really a large prize for a buy-in of only $1. When thousands of players started playing the World Record Tournament at PokerStars from within the comforts of their homes, a handful of players starting playing at Prague Hilton Hotel, which is the venue for the Prague leg of the European Poker Tour, which is scheduled to commence tomorrow.

Martin Staszko, a professional poker player from the Czech Republic, shot to poker fame when he emerged as the runner up of the Main Event of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2011. PokerStars immediately signed a sponsorship deal with Staszko, and within a short time of joining Team PokerStars Pro, Staszko started participating in the tournament along with top poker players such as Martin Hruby, Fatima Moreira de Melo, Marcin Horecki, Richard Tooth, and Dig Pelvic. Besides, PokerStars had also invited some of its top players to participate in the fun and grab some free drinks.

Gas Dives, the adjudicator of the Guinness World Records, was observing all the fun. After confirming that the entry field was indeed 200,000, he presented poker player Fatima a Guinness World Records certificate in the midst of showers of streamers and confetti.

The tournament is still in progress, and the results are likely to be announced tomorrow.
