THE FESTIVE SEASON is well and truly here and with it comes a desire to repeat the rituals of years gone by. The annual binge of every piece of Christmas-themed content you can find on a streaming service is practically a Christmas tradition. We’re sure family friendly classics like Elf, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Home Alone will be getting a rewatch. Alan Rickman’s behaviour in Love Actually will once again stir up controversy. And debates will be had regarding whether Die Hard qualifies as a Christmas movie or is just a movie that takes place on Christmas.

Of course, there will also be plenty more to watch on your chosen streaming platform in December. On Netflix, the most streamed show of all time (Squid Game) is getting a second season. Over on Binge, a beloved Paul Kelly song is being adapted for the screen. Then on Apple TV+ we’ll get a new-age rom com about the media circus that was the space race.

As usual, choosing what to spend your precious time watching is the hardest part. The big hitters like Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime are so packed with must-watch films and shows that it can be difficult to discern what’s worth your time and what’s best left on the backburner – especially when you’re prone to indecision and are paying for the luxury of choice with subscriptions to multiple platforms.

Not to worry, though, Men’s Health has you covered. To help you avoid being paralysed with indecision during a dreaded doomscroll, we’ve rounded up all the very best films and shows coming to streaming platforms in December 2024.

What’s new on Netflix Australia, December 2024

December Netflix Highlight – Squid Game, season 2

The most watched Netflix original of all time is returning for a second season that is set to drop on Boxing Day. Squid Game season two will see Lee Jung-jae reprise his role as Gi-Hun. After winning the life or death game in season one, Gi-Hun is returning for another round. What happened to the millions he won in the first season remains unclear, but we’re sure he has a good reason for once again staking his life against the game show.

Also on Netflix in December is new thriller series Black Doves, which has already been renewed for a second season before the first has even premiered. It stars Keira Knightley as a spy forced into hiding after her secret lover is killed. Another spy/assassin who just so happens to be an old flame (played by the voice of Paddington bear, Ben Whishaw) is sent to protect her.

December Disney+ Highlight – Skeleton Crew

The next entry in the Star Wars universe, Skeleton Crew, will arrive on Disney+ in December. You can expect a family friendly story from the new series, which is set around the time of The Mandalorian. It follows four kids who get lost in space and must find their way back to their home planet. Along the way they’ll encounter strange places, strange aliens, and Jude Law, who plays a character who says he’s a Jedi, although we’re not convinced. Skeleton Crew has been described as Goonies meets Stranger Things in space, and that sounds like a worthwhile watch to us.

In this dystopian setting, the world is in ruins due to a plague that spread across the globe and wiped out most of the human race. What’s new on Amazon Prime Video Australia, December 2024

December Amazon Prime Video Highlight – Longlegs

Amazon Prime is going all in on the Christmas spirit this December, with big hitters like Love Actually, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Christmas in the Spotlight all coming to the platform. Love Actually and The Grinch are the classic choices, but if you’re after something fresh, Christmas in the Spotlight could be the move. The film revolves around a pop star falling in love with an American football player. What an inconceivable plotline! Or at least it would be inconceivable if it wasn’t a complete rip-off of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship. It’s sure to be some overtly cheesy fun.

Make sure to add Longlegs to your watchlist too. It’s one of the most critically acclaimed horror movies of the year and centres on an FBI investigation into a series of murders where fathers are killing their entire families,` seemingly without any motive. The presence of a mysterious figure known only as ‘Longlegs’ at each of the murders leads the chief investigator (who has her own connection to Longlegs) to suspect an occult factor.

What’s new on Binge, December 2024

December Binge Highlight – How to Make Gravy

Big news for Binge, the platform has delivered its first ever original film – and it’s all based on Paul Kelly’s iconic song ‘How to Make Gravy’. The film will follow the same narrative of the song, focusing on a prisoner who writes a letter to his brother lamenting the fact that he won’t be home for Christmas this year and won’t be able to make gravy for the Christmas roast. A mostly Australian lineup brings the song to the screen, including Daniel Henshall, Brenton Thwaites, Kate Mulvany and Hugo Weaving. Sounds like the ideal Christmas movie to us.

What’s new on Apple TV+, December 2024

December Apple TV+ Highlight – Fly Me to the Moon

Starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum, Fly Me to the Moon is a romantic-comedy set against the backdrop of the Apollo 11 moon landing. While it may blur the line between fact and fiction, the film is based on the real battle to improve the public’s perception of the first moon mission at a time when Americans were hesitant to support funding due to social unrest and the Vietnam War. Eventually, they were won over by some effective marketing organised by NASA journalist-turned-public relations pro Julian Scheer, who coordinated news coverage of Apollo 11 and serves as the inspiration for the Johansson’s character Kelly Jones. Tatum on the other hand plays the launch’s director, who is weary of the operation turning into a media circus but can’t help but be attracted to this marketing genius.

AS OCTOBER WRAPS up and the holiday season appears within view, this time of year can feel like a real slog. The work segment of your work/life balance might be feeling like it’s getting all the attention, as you tough it out for just a few more months. A consequence of this sentiment is that it makes how you spend your time off all the more important. Some might take the opportunity to get out into nature, or take advantage of the warmer weather to head to the beach. Personally, we’ll be spending it thoroughly engrossed in the latest hit series and films coming to streaming platforms in November. We advise you to do the same.

We’re in for a big month of streaming content. On Apple TV+, the highly anticipated World War II drama Blitz, which is tipped to win Oscars, will premiere on November 22nd. On Binge, Dune: Prophecy will continue Denis Villeneuve’s blockbuster Dune franchise – while Dune: Part Two will make its streaming debut on Netflix. Of course, we also can’t look past the fact that Jake Paul will finally face off against Mike Tyson in a boxing match, and it’ll all be streamed on Netflix.

As usual, choosing what to watch is the hardest part.

Not to worry though, Men’s Health has you covered. To help you avoid being paralysed with indecision during a dreaded doomscroll, we’ve rounded up all the very best films and shows coming to streaming platforms in November 2024.

What’s new on Netflix Australia, November 2024

November Netflix Highlight – Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson (Live Event)

Netflix always goes big at this time of year, and the streamer’s release schedule for November is holding to form. At the top of the billing is the long-awaited bout between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, which will be streaming live. Barring any further injuries, back-outs or last-minute excuses, that fight will take place on November 16th.

Also on Netflix in November, the second half of Outer Banks‘ fourth season will premiere on November 7th. Cobra Kai‘s sixth season will also get a part two on November 15th, for some family-friendly viewing. The Piano Lesson, which is set in 1936 Pittsburgh during the aftermath of the Great Depression and follows the Charles family, who come to blows over differing opinions on what should be done about a family heirloom, an ornate piano with designs carved by an enslaved ancestor, will also premiere. Although the film may struggle to beat the nepo baby allegations, with Denzel Washington set to produce, his son Malcolm to make his directorial debut, and other son John David to star. Finally, Dune: Part Two will make its streaming debut on November 29th – and if you don’t know why that film is worth watching, we suggest you crawl out from underneath that rock you’ve been living under.

What’s new on Disney+ Australia, November 2024

November Disney+ Highlight – Say Nothing

November looks like it will be a quieter month over on Disney+, but only in terms of the quantity of new content – as usual, the quality is sublime. Say Nothing is the headliner. It’s a drama series based on a non-fiction chronicle of the same name and details Northern Ireland’s IRA movement amid the troubles. Beginning with the disappearance of a single mother, Say Nothing expands into a broader examination of the secrets of an extraordinarily violent period. We recently sped through the book, and it certainly appears ripe for dramatisation.

Elsewhere on Disney+, Music by John Williams is a new documentary about its eponymous legendary composer. If the name John Williams doesn’t mean anything to you, there’s a strong chance you’ve still heard his work. Williams composed the scores of the Star Wars, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones movies, as well as Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Home Alone, E.T. and the original Superman.

Another standout is Interior Chinatown, where Jimmy Yang stars as an extra in a crime procedural before witnessing a crime that places him at the centre of the action. There’s also a new documentary on the Beatles first visit to the United States, titled Beatles ’64.

What’s new on Binge, November 2024

November Binge Highlight – Dune: Prophecy

Binge hasn’t released its November scheduling information just yet, but in the meantime you can catch up the biggest series of the moment, The Penguin. Come back here soon for updates.

We do know when some of Binge’s headliners will be premiering in November though, with Dune: Prophecy leading the pack. A prequel to Denis Villenueve’s wildly successful Dune duology, Dune: Prophecy focuses on the origins of the Bene Gesserit religious sisterhood. What’s new on Apple TV+, November 2024

November Apple TV+ Highlight – Blitz

It’s been 11 years since 12 Years a Slave won the Oscar for Best Picture, and in that time, director Steve McQueen has only helmed one other feature film. That streak is about to end with Blitz. Set in London during the ‘blitz’ bombing campaign of World War II, Blitz centres on a nine-year-old boy who is evacuated to the countryside, only to find himself in peril after returning to London in an attempt to find his way home. Keep an eye on this one, as its tipped to pick up plenty of accolades. It could also net Saoirse Ronan, who plays the boy’s distraught mother who searches for him as the bombs fall, her first Oscar.

FORGIVE ME FATHER, for I have sinned. I am no longer kneeling at the altar of Andrew Scott’s “Hot Priest”, and Jude Law’s Young Pope has left the building. There is a new man of the cloth in the synagogue, and he ain’t no challah back boy. It’s Adam Brody’s hot rabbi in Netflix’s Nobody Wants This.

For those of you who were welcomed to Orange County, California in the aughts, you will remember Adam Brody as Seth Cohen, the nerdy but adorable high school student who befriends his father’s ward, bad boy Ryan Atwood (Ben McKenzie) on teen soap The O.C. But now he’s back in a new series where he plays – wait for it – a hot young(ish) rabbi. The setup of the series is easy enough: a young podcastress, Joanne (Kristen Bell) and her sister Morgan (Justine Lupe, or Willa from Succession) tell their listeners about all their dating woes in LA, rife with the emotionally unavailable, hot mess men at every corner on a Call Her Daddy-esque podcast titled, you guessed it, Nobody Wants This. At a dinner party Bell meets Brody’s Rabbi Noah Roklov in a case of mistaken identity that gets quickly sorted, and throughout the series, he continues to surprise her at every turn by subverting her often-mistaken ideas of what a rabbi is (He smokes weed! He has sex!), and who a single man dating in LA can be.

From the beginning, Nobody Wants This sets its viewers at ease, assuring us that Brody’s Rabbi Roklov isn’t your typical love interest. He is not the brooding, silent type whose icy exterior has to be warmed, and chipped away at by the right (read perfect, pure) woman. He is not the cheating womanizer who finds the right (read perfect, pure) woman that makes him stop his cheating ways, and finally see women not as objects for him to use and conquer, but as sentient, human people who also deserve respect.

When we meet Brody’s Noah, he is funny, besweatered, and charming. (Would I trust him to open a vintage bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape? No, but you can’t win them all.) Not only that, but somewhat refreshingly for male love interests, he is soft, observant, and tender, and emotionally available – all of which scare Bell’s Joanne. And all of which other men can learn from! Sure there’s a mishap with a sportcoat, but he comes back from it, and that’s the power of being emotionally available!

Suffice to say, a religious man being hot is not a new thing – there was Mandy Patinkin’s yeshiva student in Yentl, and Ben Stiller’s hip rabbi in Keeping The Faith. Sadly, even the young Mandy Patinkin bathing naked in the lake, with droplets of water burrowing beneath his forest of chest hair, down his abs, and finding their way to his – ahem, even young Mandy can’t compare to Adam Brody’s hot rabbi in Nobody Wants This. I can’t lie.

kristen bell, adam brody, nobody wants this

NETFLIX

This is a glorified thirst-piece, but it’s not just about how utterly stricken I am by his soft tousled curls, or his puppy dog eyes, and it goes beyond how much I want to see Brody’s character out of that sweater. It’s more so about how tender he is, how he speaks to Bell’s character Joanne (terrible name, but I digress) and holds her face when they talk. How at every point when she wants to run, he reels her back in by being open and honest, by being accountable for his actions (and sometimes even hers), by providing assurance and certainty when she needs it the most. By being a good partner.

All too often when it comes to romantic comedies, or romantic dramas, we’re faced with romantic heroes who are allowed to be flawed, denigratory, and imperfect. If we’re being honest, they’re kind of allowed to be a dick, while the women they encounter are given no such leeway, mirroring the gendered double standards that we often see in real-life dating. Nobody Wants This subverts that notion. First with Joanne, a flawed woman who is afraid of love, runs at the sight of a healthy relationship, and gives up when things get even a little bit too hard. And just as importantly with Rabbi Roklov, a man who sees her misgivings, soothes her distrust, assuages her ick, and loves her through it all.

Beneath this extremely well-written, well-acted television series replete with some of the most insane chemistry I’ve seen in years, is a lesson for men. That providing emotional security and stability, instead of leading with money and a plot of land, will always win out in the end. Even as bad as things get (wearing a sportcoat with basketball shorts), you can still come back from “the ick” and that is no small feat. Trust, everybody wants this.

YES, WE ARE still more than one month away from Halloween, but spooky season has already well and truly commenced. If you don’t feel like the vibes are right yet, we know just the thing to get you in the mood – an array of Halloween fodder that you can stream over the next month. Or, if you’re simply not a Halloween type of guy, there are still plenty of reasons to settle down for a night in, cosied up on your couch with snacks nearby and a plethora of top-notch streaming content to get through, because as we’ve always argued so vehemently, there’s never really a bad time to do so.

As the weather is getting hotter, so too is the content coming to streaming services this October. The much-derided Australian reboot of The Office is about to premiere on Amazon Prime, so expect some discourse. Territory will soon announce itself as Australia’s answer to Yellowstone over on Netflix. Budding auteur Dylan River’s latest series Thou Shalt Not Steal is heading to stan. And of course, every streaming platform is bolstering its arsenal of horror movies and Halloween classics to prepare for the 31st.

The vast swaths of new content don’t make it easy for you though.

Not to worry though, Men’s Health has you covered. To help you avoid being paralysed with indecision during a dreaded doomscroll, we’ve rounded up all the very best films and shows coming to streaming platforms in October 2024.

What’s new on Netflix Australia, October 2024

October Netflix Highlight – Territory

Brace yourself, because Netflix is in for a massive month this October. Headlining the waves of new content heading to Netflix is Territory, which as far as we can tell is essentially an Australian version of Yellowstone. Set deep in the Australian outback, the world’s largest cattle farm is left without an obvious successor. A Succession-style dispute ensues, while powerful factions including miners, landowners, cowboys and gangsters prepare for a hostile takeover.

Also on Netflix in September, your hunger for Halloween vibes will be sated by both Lisa Frankenstein and Late night With The Devil, two of the buzziest horror films of the year. Basketball fans will find a bingeworthy new series in Starting 5, which follows five NBA superstars throughout the course of the 2023-24 season. The featured athletes include LeBron James, Anthony Edwards and Jayson Tatum. Finally, the first part of the fourth season of polarising drama series Outer Banks will premiere on October 10th.

What’s new on Amazon Prime Video Australia, October 2024

October Amazon Prime Video Highlight – The Office Australia

The Australian reboot of The Office has already received scathing reviews online, but can we at least agree to give it a chance? At the end of the day, this is an Australian cast and crew getting their big chance and they deserve a shot, even if this is the 13th iteration of a series that has already had its time in the sun and the trailer’s jokes came off as far more cringeworthy than comedic. In this rehash of the typical The Office mould, a classically out of touch office manager – the first female character to fill the standard Michael Scott role in any iteration – is devastated to learn that her branch is being shut down in the wake of the COVID pandemic. Determined to keep her work family together as staff are ordered to work from home, Felicity Ward’s Hannah Howard goes to great lengths to promote staff bonding.

AS WE EMERGE from winter, spring has sprung and the season of binge-watching is coming to an end. But if you’re someone who prefers hibernation to hayfever, don’t let the warmer temperatures fool you, because there’s never really a bad time to cozy up on the couch with wine in hand, snacks nearby and a plethora of top-notch streaming content to get through. You deserve it, don’t you?

If you’re looking for a reason to hold off on hitting the beach as we head into the warmer months, you’ll find in a streaming platform, because there’s a big month ahead. If you’re struggling with an Olympic-sized hole in your heart, the Paralympics have already kicked off and can be streamed on Stan. If a blockbuster film is what you’re after, Wolfs – starring not just one, but two Hollywood heavyweights in George Clooney and Brad Pitt – over on Apple TV+ should keep you satiated. While on Binge, The Penguin (a companion piece to The Batman) will make its long-awaited premiere.

The vast swaths of new content don’t make it easy for you though.

Not to worry though, Men’s Health has you covered. To help you avoid being paralysed with indecision during a dreaded doomscroll, we’ve rounded up all the very best films and shows coming to streaming platforms in September 2024.

What’s new on Netflix in September?

September Netflix Highlight – The Perfect Couple

Another routine month where a vast array of new content will hit Netflix is headlined by new series The Perfect Couple, starring Nicole Kidman. The Aussie actress plays the matriarch of a well-to-do Nantucket family who is none too welcoming to her soon-to-be daughter in law. The proceedings take a morbid turn when a body is discovered on the beach, turning a tense weekend of wedding prep into a whodunnit.

Also on Netflix in September, Uglies marks the triumphant return on the young adult dystopian genre that was so popular in the early 2010s. Based on a popular book series, the world of Uglies is an oppressive, looks-obsessed dictatorship where young people are given a surgical makeover once they become teenagers, resulting in a class system of ‘uglies’ and ‘pretties’.

What’s new on Stan in September?

September Stan Highlight – From season 3

The highly anticipated third season of From will premiere on Stan on September 23rd. It’s a lowkey and downright creepy sci-fi drama. Set in a small town where nobody can leave and terrifying monsters emerge once the sun goes down, escape may finally be possible for the show’s protagonists. Although, they won’t be getting out without a fight with those aforementioned critters.

The Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon will also be getting a continuation of his spin-off series in The Book of Carol on Stan next month. After scouring France during the first season of the show, Dixon has made some friends and is heading to Spain on a zombie-killing quest. It’s not your typical Euro summer, but who are we to judge?

Elsewhere, a range of new movies will make their streaming debuts on Amazon Prime, including The Iron Claw, The Dry 2 and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

The biggest release coming to Binge in September is undoubtedly The Penguin, which will be premiering on the platform on September 20th. Starring Colin Farrell, the Penguin is a spin-off of 2022’s The Batman. It follows Oswald Cobblepot (yes, that’s the Penguin’s real name) on his rise from a disfigured nobody to a feared gangster.

The film is an action comedy starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney as a pair of professional fixers hired to cover up the same crime – unbeknownst to each other. Stuck on the same job, the pair of lone wolves are forced to work together as their night progressively spirals out of control.

The post Kit Harington is shirtless, ripped and scheming in ‘Industry’ appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

AS FAR AS stars go, Kit Harington is in pretty rarified air. In many ways, Game of Thrones was one of the last pieces of monoculture; the HBO fantasy smash was one of the final shows that it felt like truly everyone watched, and he played one of the most important characters in its entire run. Despite most people not knowing his work before hand, and only working on a handful of things after, the run as Jon Snow really bought Harington a very special bit of real estate – and now, as he stars in the third season of HBO’s Industry, he’s cashing it in.

In the years since playing Jon Snow, Harington has stayed relatively quiet. His post-Westeros work has been limited to smaller profile films and a small role in Eternals (which promised an MCU future that has yet to be realised). But with Industry, he’s stepping up front and centre, taking his place once again as the key game-shaker in a piece of HBO’s crown jewel programming.

Harington plays Sir Henry Muck in Industry, the founder and CEO of Lumi, a green energy company getting ready to launch its first IPO (Initial Public Offering). Henry is manager by Robert (Harry Lawtey), but given how massive a moment this is for Pierpoint and Co., the London-based investment bank that the show revolves around, almost everyone at the firm is getting involved, from the top-level executives to newly-hired graduates. The business is revolving around Henry and Lumi, because it seems like the money coming in could be absolutely massive.

When a property like that is set up, you need a strong character to lead it – and Industry proved it’s game to do just that. Just in the first episode alone, Muck is shown to be exactly the kind of character that the show proved to be so good at building with Jay Duplass’s Jesse Bloom in season 2; someone charming enough so audiences understand why people are drawn to them, but cunning and eccentric enough to know that we’re going to be on a roller coaster ride for as long as we’re watching.

As Henry is preparing for Lumi’s IPO, typical problems – we’re watching a show, after all – begin to arise; investors back out, prices shift, the works. But Harington’s performance does something unique in that he doesn’t really explode (he keeps most of that for behind his eyes): he keeps a level head, smiles, and nods. As Henry, Harington gets to use all the charm that had to be taken off the table when playing the stoic Jon Snow.

But like so many others in Industry, he also likes to play head gamesAfter a phone call that Yasmin (Marisa Abela) was on ended disastrously, Henry somehow got her personal phone number and gave her a call later. Now, this should be a bit inappropriate and strange (why is he calling her?), but Yasmin is having such a tough time – she’s being harassed by the paparazzi and tabloid media after her father, a famous rich guy who has recently been exposed as a sex pest, went into hiding – that anyone who’s nice to her feels like kind of a change of pace.

And when it’s someone who’s Yasmin’s type (rich, handsome), we can predict sparks may start to fly. He invites her to come see him for a conversation later that night, and while she expresses some annoyance – complaining to Robert (Harry Lawtey) about giving away her number, which Henry says is how he got it, despite Rob’s later denial – she nonetheless attends, and we instantly see what’s happening.

Yasmin arrives where Henry sends her, and finds not people having drinks, or dinner, or any kind of business meeting, but rather a bunch of men playing handball; Henry is shirtless and wearing athletic shorts. Harington clearly has worked hard for his physique, and based on the way he’s shot, we be certain that his impressive results are a secret to exactly no one in that room.

We don’t know the angle yet, but clearly he’s set Yasmin up to be in this situation; and after he introduces her and the other men with him (who are also big business players, and who know Yasmin’s disgraced father) scoff a bit, he offers some sympathy. “I know what it’s like having a family member ruin your life, so I know what you’re going through,” he tells her. “The kids are always collateral.”

Again, telling her this with his shirt off. He’s appealing to her on an emotional level, but it’s hard to ignore the attractive, charming, and (seemingly) kind man right in front of her.

Kit Harington in Industry

Nick Strasburg / HBO

It’s not hard to figure out why Harington has laid low since Thrones; he made his name as a noble hero, fighting White Walkers and attempting to preserve the good of the realm in a fantasy epic (and, outside of work, he’s also expressed issues with the mental health anguishes that come along with the industry and roles like the one he played in Thrones). That can be awesome, but it doesn’t give an actor a full chance to show the range of who they can be, and what they can do.

In the tremendously funny 2015 HBO film 7 Days in Hell, Harington gets to show off his comedy chops as a tennis star who rarely has a single thought in his head. Even his role in Eternals put him in different shoes; rather than be the hero who comes in to save the day, he’s just a professor and a guy (though, eventually, his character will have to deal with some troubling family history on his way to becoming an anti-hero).

Industry, in the early goings, is giving him the opportunity to prove all of this. Can he be a realistic figure in an intense, hyper-active world? Sure seems like it. Can he use put both his charm and physical prowess on display in service of his character? Yeah, we’re going to give him that one too.

We don’t know where Henry’s role – and Harington’s performance – will go from here, but any questions as to how he’s going to fit into this new world, and what he stands to provide, have been completely answered. And we’re thrilled to keep watching.

Instead, let us select the month's viewing highlights for you

AS YOU’RE LIKELY aware, it’s fairly cold outside right now. We’re approaching the end of winter, and the end of binge-watch season, but even in its death throes the chill still has some bite to it. Meaning that before the season ends, you still have a plethora of excuses to use when looking for a reason to spend the night at home streaming your favourite series and films – “It’s too cold to go outside” typically works a treat.

To make the prospect of extra time on the couch even more tantalising, let us be the first to tell you that streaming platforms are due for a big month this August. If you want a laugh out loud comedy with a side of mystery, you’ll find it on Disney+ when a new season of Only Murders in the Building premieres. If the world of Lord of the Rings is more your style, the second season of Rings of Power is on its way to Amazon Prime. And if you’re an Attenborough nut, a new documentary narrated by the man himself is heading to Netflix.

The vast swaths of new content don’t make it easy for you though. The big hitters like Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime are so packed with content that they make it difficult to discern what’s worth your time and what’s best left on the backburner – especially when you’re prone to indecision and are paying for the luxury of choice with subscriptions to multiple platforms.

Not to worry though, Esquire has you covered. To help you avoid being paralysed with indecision during a dreaded doomscroll, we’ve rounded up all the very best films and shows coming to streaming platforms in August 2024.

What’s new on Netflix in August?

August Netflix Highlight – The Secret World of Sound with David Attenborough

Another routine month where bucket loads of new content will hit Netflix is headlined by a documentary narrated by David Attenborough. At 98 years of age, there can’t be too many Attenborough docos left, so make the most of them while you can. In this one, Attenborough takes a break from showing us the world’s most incredible sights to focus on some spectacular sounds. Using advanced audio technology, The Secret World of Sound will reveal some of the rarest noises emitted from the animal kingdom. Volume all the way up for this.

Also on Netflix in August, Umbrella Academy is back for a fourth season, and it looks like this could be the beginning of the end for the beloved show about a group of eccentric superheroes – and that’s not just speculation; the last episode of the new season is literally titled ‘The Beginning of the End’. Lastly, in case you need a popcorn movie to pass the time, Mark Wahlberg’s The Union is a prime contender. In addition to Wahlberg, the film stars Halle Berry and JK Simmons as spies in a secret intelligence organisation. It should be a good time with plenty of action sequences, but don’t expect any Oscar buzz.

What’s new on Disney+ in August?

August Disney+ Highlight – Only Murders in the Building, season 4

A relatively soft month lies ahead for Disney+ in terms of new releases, but there’ll be a big one towards the end of it. The overtly saccharine and eminently popular Only Murders in the Building has a new season landing on August 27th. The main cast of Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin all return, along with Meryl Streep and a number of new characters played by Eva Longoria, Zach Galifinakis and Eugene Levy.

What’s new on Stan in August?

August Stan Highlight – Critical Incident

Brand new Australian series Critical Incident will premiere on Stan on August 12th. It’s a gritty crime drama inspired by real-life experiences in the juvenile justice system that centres on a well-meaning cop and a troubled teenager. Their paths cross when they cause an accident during a chase through the Sydney suburb of Blacktown – oh yeah, you’ll be able to spot some familiar locations in this one as it was filmed all over Western Sydney. If you’re looking to test your faith in the justice system, this is worth a watch.

Queerstralia will also debut on Stan next month. It’s all about the untold history of Australia’s queer community. Featuring stories about “gay diggers, lesbian convict gangs and cross-dressing bushrangers”, it’ll doubtlessly be a colourful affair. Finally, we can’t forget the premiere of the third season of Bel Air on August 16th.

What’s new on Apple TV+ in August?

August Apple TV+ Highlight – Bad Monkey

It’s a huge month over on Apple TV+, where the Vince Vaughn-led Bad Monkey will make its long-awaited premiere. Vaughn plays a restaurant inspector who must return to his old ways as a detective after a tourist discovers a severed arm in Southern Florida. Assuredly, a monkey is involved somehow. We’re just not sure how it services the plot yet though.

Elsewhere on Apple TV+, Cowboy Cartel is a soon to be released documentary series about a rookie FBI agent who uncovered a Mexican cartel’s money laundering operation embedded in American horse racing. Last of all, The Instigators brings together Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as reluctant partners in crime who must evade police and bureaucracy after a heist gone wrong.

The post After 45 years, George Miller still loves making things explode appeared first on Men's Health Magazine Australia.

GEORGE MILLER HAS been making things majestically, strikingly, and convincingly blow up on screen for more than 40 years. But explosions aren’t part of the equation right now, as we sit on a couch several stories up in the Warner Bros. Discovery office in Midtown Manhattan, and he politely requests permission he certainly doesn’t need from me to take a sip of a large Starbucks drink that just arrived. “Do you mind?” he asks, mid-conversation, in a completely earnest tone, his face framed by a pair of signature round-frame glasses. That face is one most likely recognize from the time it made several appearances during the Oscars broadcast back in 2016 as Mad Max: Fury Road cleaned up, winning six Academy Awards.

Now, almost a decade (and another feature film, 2022’s Three Thousand Years of Longing) later, and Miller has finally returned to the Wasteland of post-apocalyptic Australia with Furiosa: A Mad Max SagaThe film, which he mapped out and conceived before Fury Road was made, slows things down from its signature breakneck pace. It tells the backstory of Furiosa, originally played by Charlize Theron and now played primarily by Anya Taylor-Joy, over the course of nearly 20 years as she chases revenge against the dipshit warlord who wronged her (a transformative, evil, and hilarious Chris Hemsworth) and becomes the robot-armed badass we met in the previous film.

Miller, at 79 years old, is putting out the 11th feature film of a directorial career that’s also included dark comedy (The Witches of Eastwick), pure drama (Lorenzo’s Oil), cutting edge family fare (the Babe and Happy Feet films), and even an aborted superhero epic (Justice League: Mortal, which is its own whole thing). But nothing defines his career like the Mad Max franchise, which kicked his journey off with the low-budget but nonetheless thrilling original in 1979, and marks a world he’s revisited now four different times in the 45 years since. And as with all of those films, Furiosa is intricately-planned, full of scenes with countless moving pieces and changing components that needed to fit together perfectly to work; these movies are like a 1,000 piece Lego set that, somehow, only Miller has the step-by-step directions to.

But, himself the creator of a world where penguins joyously dance via motion-capture animation, Miller uses a different metaphor to explain how he sees things.

“To be honest, film is like visual music,” he says, choosing his words carefully just a few days before Furiosa was set to be released. “It’s not just one shot, it’s a progression of shots. It’s not just one note, or one chord, it’s a progression of those notes and chords that give you the experience in the music. And so it is with film – it’s visual music.

Miller has continued to make his own brand of beautiful, chaotic, fire-filled stunt bonanzas, and proves he’s still operating at the very top of his powers with the visually-stunning epic of Furiosa. We spoke with the legendary director about dialogue and stunts in his movies, the incredible work of his lead actors, and far more.

WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT

MEN’S HEALTH: You said in your New Yorker interview that “action sequences are the equivalent of dialogue scenes in other movies.”

GEORGE MILLER: That’s right.

MH: I’m curious how you view the function of stunts within that equation.

GM: Well, first of all, story has primacy over everything else. Then, it’s all about the characters. It’s all about the interaction of characters. All action sequences should drive the interaction of the characters, and therefore progress the story. That’s the underlying strategy of all action scenes.

Then, you’re basically using conflict—which is the essence of drama. Someone has an intention, and you put up obstacles, and so on, and there are rising conflicts. There have to be rising conflicts, they can’t dance around the same spot, because then it gets boring. And then they have to progress, and you learn something about the characters. So, a sequence like the “Stowaway to Nowhere” really tells you a lot about those two key characters—Furiosa and Praetorian Jack—and, under extreme conditions, how they handle it, and what’s revealed about them. What is their essence?

That’s the basis of it.

MH: What do you want someone’s takeaway to be at the end of a sequence like that?

GM: You want to know the characters and where they’re going. I mean, this is the story of Furiosa, who is taken away as a child from her family and her community, and spends virtually the next 20 years trying to get home. She’s forged in the crucible of this wasteland. This is a very harsh world, and an extreme world, and her character is forged. What is intrinsic to her as a child, her skills, she’s called on to really survive by the use of whatever internal resources she has. And she becomes what she does at the end.

For me, that’s key. She has to learn on the run. She has no time to think about it, or whatever. She’s got to improvise her way through it, and we see what she’s made of. And not only do we see it, but we also see that Praetorian Jack, who drives this big new War Rig, the best thing ever created in the wasteland, sees it.

So, basically, we’ve forged a relationship between these two characters.

MH: It took you 27 takes to get the most important shot in the “Stowaway” sequence just right. Do you still feel a relief when everything finally clicks perfectly, even having done what you do for so long?

GM: Oh yeah. Of course. You know, whether it’s just the wind blowing the right way so that someone’s hair doesn’t blow across their face, but it blows in an interesting way. Whether the sun’s in the right position, and when you know it, and you see it, it’s captured in the camera, and you say ‘OK, we got that one.’ You feel a sense of small, incremental accomplishments. And that sustains you through the shoot. And then you get it in the cutting room, and you put all the pieces together, and it starts to emerge. That’s always really interesting to me.

WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT

MH: How has the evolution of the technology behind stunts and action changed your ability as a storyteller and what you want to put on the screen?

GM: Big time. One of the reasons why I’m still making films, and indeed Mad Max films, is I’m really still curious about story. Not only how to to tell story, but why we tell story. And that goes hand-in-hand with the ever-evolving technology. For instance, when we made the Babe movies, the first one was done at Universal, because it was the beginning of digital CGI. Universal had just done Jurassic Park, which was the first big CGI movie—there were 63 shots of dinosaurs in that. And the studio, at the time, said ‘We know how it works, and we know it can work with the animals.’ And so that’s what we did with Babe.

By the time we got to do Happy Feet almost a decade later, the cameraman on the Babe movies, Andrew Lesnie, he went and shot Lord of the Rings. When he came back from the first Lord of the Rings, he showed me the first motion capture of Gollum, and we had the story of the penguins. And I thought ‘That’s how we can make these penguins dance!’ And that drove Happy Feet.

For instance, the “Stowaway” sequence shot for 78 days. Now, some of the skies in those shots were brilliant—and others weren’t. But you have to keep a consistency of the sky. So, you’re able to take your favorite skies, and make sure they’re consistent right through the story.

Little things like that. But most of all, I would say that cameras now are not only relatively small, they’re much higher resolution, and you don’t have to be stopping all the time to reload the celluloid, because you’ve got a computer chip recording at 4-8K, and you can run it for 45 minutes. It’s not costing you anything. So, if you’ve got, say, an explosion, you’ve not only got to start the camera, but you’ve got to get your crew out before the explosion. And if you’re shooting the explosion with high-speed cameras, you’ve only got a very short time before you’re running out of celluloid. I’m sure it’s happened many times—they run out of film just before the main action happened on camera. Now, you don’t have to worry about things like that.

MH: Mad Max: The Wasteland has been mentioned as something you’ve got ready to go if you get the opportunity. What more can you share about that?

GM: I always prefer not to talk about it until we’re making it. But certainly I would like to—if Furiosa works well enough, I would certainly look towards it.

MH: You and Edgar Wright have both talked about how you met and he recommended Anya Taylor-Joy for Furiosa. How did you know that she would be game for all the stunts and intensity that the role entails?

GM: I could see it in her work. Edgar was insistent that she’s got it all—she’s got everything that an actor needs. Actors have to be physically athletic, they have to be intellectually athletic, and they have to be emotionally athletic. They’re warriors, in a way, particularly to do these films. Anya is someone who studied ballet from the age of 3, and up to the age of 15—I’ve worked with dancers, and I’ve realized how they have this relaxed discipline, and the precision is really important. She was almost hard-wired for this because of that. I could see it in the work she did, and it proved to be the case.

She worked incredibly hard, she did a lot of her own stunts. She’s got that ability. Again, she’s very, very physically and emotionally agile.

MH: How does Chris Hemsworth’s work in Furiosa compare to his work as Thor, and elsewhere?

GM: This is different. Chris Hemsworth—I had one meeting with him, and I realized there’s way more than meets the eye. He’s a guy of many dimensions, incredibly wise for someone so young. And when I got to know his history, and his family, I realized where they came from. Again, physically athletic, emotionally athletic, and he can bring that all together. A little bit like any athlete.

You know, you’re like a football coach when you’re a director. People have got the basic talent, and then you hone those talents, and you help them get the best of it. You help put together a team, and you have to plan, and you prepare. But in the moment of the game, it’s all handed over to the instinctive response. They can’t think about ‘I’m going to do this and that.’ They can’t think about it. All the preparation has prepared them for that, and then they pull off the moves, and when it really works, it really works. You almost don’t know how it comes together. Working with Chris, I saw that over and over again. It blew me away. I had no idea he could do the kind of stuff he was doing on screen.
